"Deck construction is one of the least complicated and most satisfying home improvement projects a person can undertake," says Alan Thielemann, director of marketing services for Georgia-Pacific Corporation. "A deck not only enhances the cosmetic appearance of the home, but also adds value to the property."
The latest designs allow expression, yet are functional with the creative use of notched posts, multi-level platforms, overhangs, angled corners and asymmetrical shapes. Decorative deck floors may feature eye-catching configurations of planks which create an attractive, basketweave effect. Additionally, a hot tub, pool and barbecue grill are just a few of the luxuries that can be incorporated into the deck's scheme.
Designing and building your own deck enables you to highlight your yard's best features and improve problem areas. "If the property has an unsightly view or intense sunlight, features such as lattice-work and flowerboxes can be added to make the area more appealing," Thielemann suggests.
Built-in extras such as benches and a picnic table are a handsome and functional solution to the problems of weather-worn, outdoor furniture and limited space. By constructing a bay to house a barbecue grill, another eyesore can be hidden while adding an interesting design feature to the deck.
