All Decked Out

Form Follows Function

Before heading for the lumberyard, set aside some time to define your goals for the project. Consider your lifestyle and how you spend your leisure time. Do you prefer sunbathing in intense rays or relaxing in the shade? Do you want more outside space for entertaining, or do you need more privacy? These factors and others will determine the size, shape and features of the deck.

Examine the overall complexion of your yard. Do a walk through, making note of areas or objects which inhibit the yard's livabiltiy and ambiance. Be aware of sharp changes in slope, proximity to neighboring property, amount of privacy and view: this will help you establish effective guidelines for planning your deck.

As a safety measure, Alan Thielemann (director of marketing services for Georgia-Pacific Corporation) suggests contacting the utility company for assistance in locating underground utility lines in your yard. "This will avoid the risk of digging up a gas line, water main or electric line, causing injury to yourself and incurring costly damage," he explains.

Consult your local government about building permits and inquire about community regulations that limit the size of decks; many areas require that decks be "set back" a specific number of feet from the property line. Check your deed for subdivision limits on home additions.

Using graph paper, draw a blueprint of the deck, including required dimensions and extra features such as lattice-work, benches and stairs. To make an accurate scale, measure the ground with a flexible 25- or 50-foot tape measure, and let one square on the paper equal one foot. Add flowerboxes and furniture to the plan to ensure that there is enough space available for all ornaments.

"Planning is the most important step in deck construction," Thielemann says. "A written plan will result in a finished project that you will enjoy for years."
